What is Chinese Calligraphy?

"Calligraphy" literally means "beautiful writing." It is seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels, and houses everywhere.
Chinese calligraphy is the art form of writing Chinese characters. With its unique aesthetic value and cultural connotation, Chinese calligraphy occupies an important position in the world's art treasury.
Picasso once expressed: "If I once lived in China, I must had become a calligrapher rather than a painter".
The origin of Chinese calligraphy can be traced back to the oracle bone inscriptions and gold inscriptions thousands of years ago.
With the development of history, Chinese calligraphy has gone through the evolution of various styles of writing such as Clerical Script, Regular Script, Running Script and Cursive Script. Each style of calligraphy has its own specific style and characteristics, reflecting the different styles and aesthetic interests of the times.

The process of creating a calligraphy work usually includes the following aspects:

1. Selection of tools: Calligraphy creation requires the use of tools such as brushes, ink, rice paper and ink slabs.

There are different kinds of ink.
Xuan paper has different types: Raw Xuan, PiMade Xuan, Sized Xuan.
The ink stone is concerned about the texture and craftsmanship.

3. Calligraphy: It refers to the structure and form of the characters in a piece of calligraphy, and different styles of calligraphy have different structural characteristics and aesthetic requirements.
4. Chapters: The layout arrangement of a calligraphy work, including the distance between characters, the arrangement between rows and lines, etc. Good chapters can make the work structurally sound and rhythmic.
5. Penmanship: the technique of using strokes in calligraphy works, including lifting and pressing, turning and folding strokes, etc. The skilful use of penmanship is an important symbol of the art of calligraphy.
Chinese calligraphy also emphasis the personality and emotional expression of the writer, and each calligrapher has his or her own unique style. Calligraphy works can be used as objects of appreciation and collection, as well as for conveying information and cultural inheritance.
In China, calligraphy as an art form has been passed down not only among the literati but also as a cultural heritage for ordinary people to learn and appreciate.
Calligraphy education is incorporated into the basic education system from primary school onwards, and children are encouraged to learn and practise calligraphy in order to develop their aesthetic ability and cultural cultivation.
